Man, Mind, and Machines by Seth Shostak

Popular Speaker, Astronomer Dr. Seth Shostak, Entertains Institute in June:

The highly informative astronomer, Dr. Seth Shostak, once again entertained Institute members and friends about his views on sentient beings in the universe. This final lecture in our spring series was partly in recognition of the International Year of Astronomy, and was co-sponsored by the Central Texas Astronomical Society.

Shostak is senior astronomer at the SETI Institute in California, (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute), the organization that is searching for intelligent life in the universe.

Seth discussed humans’ long term survival, the next generation of space exploration, and what we may find among the stars. In his talk Seth demonstrated how the Earth is running out of resources to support man. He contends that unless we figure ways to get off the planet in the near future, humankind, as we know it, will be unable to survive. Seth made the case that our final frontier offers us more than adventure: it is the only path to survival!

Seth also took questions about his organization’s, (SETI) quest to locate extraterrestrial intelligence through radio telescope “listening.” He still predicts that we will locate a signal from an alien intelligence some time in the next 20 years.

Seth is an astrophysicist, who is a popular guest on national television programs discussing our place in the universe and the hunt for life on other planets. He is the author of the recently published book, Confessions of an Alien Hunter, and the host of the weekly science radio program, “Are We Alone?”
