Biographical Information:
Alex
Cavalli, Ph.D.
Alex CavalliPrior to the creation of DCI,
he was the Deputy Director of the IC2 Institute at UT-Austin, where he
also co-directed the E-Learning and Training Labs.
He is also the founder of Face to Face Communications, a
communications consulting firm.
In the early 90’s, while leading the architectural design of MCC's
Enterprise Integration Project, he and his staff created the
foundation for much of what is now recognized as the Internet. The
EINet project paved the way for the creation of the first Internet
search engine that became the model for every search engine
that followed and they developed the first commercial quality web browsers. His
team also devised new electronic payment mechanisms for use by
businesses engaged in electronic commerce.
Tom
Mayo, J.D.
Tom
Mayo is
Director of the Center of Ethics and Responsibility at
Southern Methodist University and an Associate Professor at both
SMU’s Dedman School of Law and Southwestern Medical School.
He serves on five hospital ethics committees and co-chairs two of them
and is co-founder of the Texas’ first pro bono legal clinic for
people with HIV disease and terminal illnesses.
He is also a member of the Advisory Committee at the University of
Texas – Southwestern Medical Center, the editor of the Medical
Humanities Series, and the monthly poetry columnist for the Dallas
Morning News.
He received the Dallas County Medical Society’s award for
outstanding leadership and service to medicine and to the community of
Dallas and has twice received the law school’s outstanding teacher
award. In 2005, he was inducted into the inaugural class
of the American Health Law Association and was a member of their board
of directors for five years.
He received his B.A. in philosophy from Amherst College and his J.D.
from Syracuse University College of Law where he was editor of the
Syracuse Law Review.
Beth
Givens
Beth Givens is
founder and director of the Privacy Rights Clearinghouse, a nonprofit
consumer organization whose mission is to raise awareness of privacy
issues through education and to advocate for consumers' privacy
rights. In her role as director, she represents the interests of
consumers in public policy proceedings at the state and federal
levels. She also writes and edits the educational material available
through the organization, such as the Fact Sheet series on privacy.
Givens has participated in numerous task forces and commissions
concerning privacy issues and the expert on consumer privacy issues
often interviewed
by national news media.
She wrote The Privacy Rights
Handbook: How to Take Control of Your Personal Information, and
co-authored Privacy Piracy: A Guide to Protecting Yourself from Identity Theft.
She also authored the encyclopedia entries on identity theft
for World Book Encyclopedia (2004) and Encyclopedia of Crime and
Punishment.
Prior to her work as a consumer advocate, she was a librarian
specializing in library network development and resource sharing.
Adm. Bobby Inman
There are few people with as extensive a background in issues of national security and privacy than Admiral Bobby Inman. With a career in intelligence that included the directorship of the National Security Agency and the Deputy Directorship of Central Intelligence, he has firsthand experience in the tradeoffs and concerns involved.
Currently, he holds the LBJ Centennial Chair in National Policy in the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, where he recently served as acting Dean. Besides teaching, Inman is managing director of Inman Ventures and on the board of directors of SBC Communications Inc., Temple-Inland Inc., and several other boards.He is also a Director of the Public Agenda Foundation.
Admiral Inman retired from the U.S. Navy after 31 years, and was the first naval intelligence officer to achieve a four-star ranking. After his retirement, he was Chairman and CEO of the Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation (MCC) in Austin for four years, Chairman, President and CEO of Westmark Systems, and served as Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas.
