Sara Speaks, Spring, 2009

(Past Issues of Sara Speaks)

Popular Speaker, Astronomer Dr. Seth Shostak, Returns:

The Institute is delighted to announce that Dr. Seth Shostak is once again returning to visit us. This final lecture in our spring series will be in recognition of the International Year of Astronomy, and will be co-sponsored by the Central Texas Astronomical Society.  Shostak is senior astronomer at the SETI Institute in California, (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence Institute), the organization that is searching for intelligent life in the universe. He will speak Sunday, June 28, at 4 p.m. in the Longhorn Conference Center of the Stagecoach Inn in Salado.

Seth will discuss our long term survival, the next generation of space exploration, and what we may find among the stars.  Are we destined to become a space-faring society, or will efforts to leave our planet continue to be limited to a fringe activity, an occasional distraction from our terrestrial troubles?  Seth makes the case that our final frontier offers us more than adventure: it is the only path to survival!

Seth is an astrophysicist, who is a popular guest on national television programs discussing our place in the universe and the hunt for life on other planets. He is the author of the recently published book, Confessions of an Alien Hunter,  and the host of the weekly science radio program, “Are We Alone?”  Copies of his books will be available for sale.

The fee for this event is $20, payable in advance, at the door, or by online registration through the Central Texas Astronomical Society.

(The Stagecoach Inn is located on the service road just south of Thomas Arnold Rd in Salado. From the north, exit Thomas Arnold Rd, turn left and cross over the freeway at Thomas Arnold, turn right on the service road at the Exxon Station. The Stagecoach Inn will be on your left about a .25 mile. Turn left into the Stagecoach Main entrance. The Longhorn Conference Center will be on the left adjacent to the main building entrance of the Stagecoach Inn.)

The annual Wilmer Memorial Lecture, in memory of Institute founders Hank and Harry Wilmer,  was held on June 6 and featured a religious scholar from Baylor. Dr. Blake Burleson’s lecture, A Meditation on ‘Staying Put:’ Jung’s Lessons from Africa, was well attended. CD’s of that lecture are available from the Institute by calling 254-947-5729.

Dr. Burleson is Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences and Senior Lecturer in Religion at Baylor University where he teaches world religions and African studies.  Texas Monthly 2004 Guide to Texas Colleges and Universities listed “Religion with Blake Burleson” as one of the four “best classes” at Baylor University.  He has traveled extensively on the African content since 1978 and directed the African Studies Program at Baylor from 1996 to 2003.
