Update
on Institute Activities:
Wilmer Memorial Lecture Held: The first, annual Wilmer Memorial
Lecture was held on June 4, this year. The Harry Wilmer Lectureship,
formerly held in January, was combined with the Hank Wilmer Memorial
Lecture, that is always held
in June, to create the Wilmer Memorial Lectureship to honor both Harry and
Hank Wilmer. As with the other two lectures, it will continue to be free
and open to the public.
Author, businesswoman, and philanthropist, Marilyn Tam spoke. She is the
founder of the Us Foundation whose purpose is to raise the awareness of
and to promote and create action to support the highest common good, and
the interconnectedness of all.
She
discussed using the Us Foundation to do good works around the world, most
recently in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.
Ms. Tam talked of overcoming her difficulties of foreign birth and
being female to rise to the position as one of the top executives in the
corporate world, serving as president of Reebok and Vice-president of
Nike. She has now traded in her corporate positions for the non-profit
world and spends her time bringing the principles of business to
non-profits as a means to make a difference in the world.
She was recently honored by Greece for her good works
internationally by having her likeness placed on a Greek postage stamp.
We were delighted that she would agree to come to Salado and give
the inaugural address for the Wilmer Lecture.
Institute
Celebrates 25th Anniversary
That same
day, the attendees at the Wilmer lecture got a bonus event with the
celebration of the Institute’s 25th anniversary. Twenty-five
years ago in April, Liz Carpenter gave the first lecture to the Institute
for the Humanities, launching a tradition of excellent speakers for the
Institute that continues today.
Charter
members who attended the June event were recognized and Stew Smith, a
founding member, and one of the people intimately involved with the
creation of the Institute, spoke briefly about Harry’s vision for the
Institute in the beginning, and recounted some of the history of the
organization. A reception was held afterwards for all attending.
New
Guest Ticket Program Announced
This fall, we are
offering an opportunity for bringing guests to our lectures that we are
excited about and hope you will be, too.
We have implemented a new guest policy that could enable you to
bring more guests to our programs. Here’s how it will work:
Each
member who signs up for an individual lecture(s) by September 4th
(postmarked by that date) will receive one ticket good for bringing one
guest to any fall lecture for free. Each
member who signs up for the entire lecture series by September 4th will
receive a second free guest ticket. This
means that a couple that registers by September 4th for the entire series
would receive four free tickets to use to bring guests to any fall
program. (Payment for the dinners would be extra). We will mail these
tickets to you with your registration receipt.
Additional guests of
members during the fall series are still welcome but they will pay the
full ticket price. This new guest ticket program ends our previous half
price guest policy.
